EcoReef® is proud to announce the successful completion of its first installation in the Wairoa District, where locally manufactured EcoReef® concrete blocks were used to repair a section of Mahia East Coast Road near Kaiuku Marae.
The project marked a significant milestone for the region, showcasing how locally made, eco-friendly infrastructure can deliver fast, effective, and sustainable erosion control. A total of 135 interlocking blocks were installed in just five days—a process that would typically take twice as long using conventional methods like gabion baskets.
A Local Solution for a Local Challenge
The EcoReef® blocks were manufactured by Quality Roading and Services (QRS) at their Wairoa facility.
The site had previously suffered a significant dropout, reducing the road to a single lane and continuing to deteriorate. Thanks to the rapid installation of EcoReef®, the road was restored with minimal disruption to the community.
“It was a great result for the community as they were not impacted by prolonged road works,” said QRS Project Manager Chris McGregor. “We’re pleased to have been able to use a locally made product to get it fixed.”
EcoReef® is proud to support regional infrastructure with solutions that are resilient, sustainable, and community-focused. This project is a strong example of how local innovation and collaboration can deliver long-term benefits for both people and the environment.
